The Children’s Home, Inc. has cared for
children, families, and individuals in need for nearly 100 years.
With campuses in Winston Salem and Franklin, The Home has
served Western North Carolina by
being the place “Where Children and Families Matter Most.”
In recent years, The Children’s Home has
undergone significant changes, including becoming licensed by the
State of North Carolina as a Mental Health Residential Treatment
Center.
The Home is also licensed as a Mental Health Day Treatment
Program and a Child Placing Agency for Family Foster Care and
Therapeutic Foster Care. Most recently,
The Home officially became a licensed Adoption Agency, specializing
in foster-to-adopt placements.
The Children’s Home is accredited by the
Council on Accreditation and by the United Methodist Association’s
Educational Assessment Guidelines Leading toward Excellence (EAGLE)
program.
Through all of these changes, The Children’s
Home continues to reach those in need, embracing its mission to
children, families, and individuals, heeding the words of Jesus,
“Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these, my
brethren, you did it unto me.”
Our Mission
To grow healthy futures for children, adults and families
by ministering to the mind, body and spirit.
Our Treatment Philosophy
The Children’s Home treatment philosophy is founded on four
principles that guide our clinical practice:
1. Systems Matter:
This principle reflects our emphasis on the systems that affect each client and
his/her family. School, Church, social service and mental health agencies, and
the workplace, to name just a few systems, affect the functioning of a client
and/or family and must be taken into account when providing treatment.
2. Family is Important:
This principle supports our strong belief that family and/or family-like
connections, and the sense of belonging and well-being that healthy
relationships create, are critically important to a client’s progress. We are
committed to promoting healing in families when it is feasible. When it is not
possible, we want to help children develop and nurture relationships with
siblings, extended family or non-professional caring adults who will continue
the relationship after treatment has ended.
3. Each Client is Unique:
This principle reflects our intention to tailor treatment to the individual
client’s mental health, developmental, and emotional needs. Interventions are
targeted to specific diagnoses or behaviors that impede the client’s
functioning. The Service Plan is regularly reviewed and interventions revised to
address a client’s changing needs. Attention is paid to providing the least
restrictive intervention for each client.
4. Clients Learn by Doing:
The final principle reflects our emphasis on experiential therapy and
interventions to help clients apply their learning to all aspects of their
lives. Clients” learn by doing” and are challenged to use their personal
strengths to solve problems. The Children’s Home embraces the belief that all
people have strengths and resources. Building on strengths enhances the chance
that the functioning of the client and his/her family will improve and that
these positive changes will be maintained.
In summary, we believe that children and their families are
resilient, have multiple strengths, and can change. As a result of the
partnership between our professional staff, the family, and referral and support
systems in the community, we believe that children and their families can
improve their functioning and create a healthier environment for themselves.
