Residential Respite Care

for Children with

Developmental Disabilities

Tise Cottage at The Children’s Home is a support service to families who have school-aged children with developmental disabilities needing temporary residential respite care with the intention of providing some relief for families and caregivers.  Often called the “gift of time,” respite provides short term care for children with disabilities while allowing the caregiver necessary rest and relief.  Respite care is important—often caregivers can have seemingly overwhelming stress that impedes their ability to function and cope.  For caregivers, finding time for themselves is vital.  Keeping themselves rejuvenated and balanced will help all members of the family cope with the intensity of caring for their special needs child.

Enhancing quality of life is a priority at The Children’s Home—not only for caregivers but also for children with developmental disabilities.  Families can be assured their loved one is being cared for by trained staff who will support their physical, emotional, and behavioral needs in a setting that also provides a variety of developmentally-appropriate recreational opportunities.

Admission criteria excludes medically fragile or highly aggressive children.  Our assessment also considers each child’s level of need in relation to the population we may serve on any given weekend.  Due to safety factors related to a 2:5 staff-to-client ratio, we specifically assess for age, mobility, level of self-care, medical needs, aggression toward others, and self harming behaviors.

Our goal is to provide a safe, home-like atmosphere where children with special needs can receive care while providing families with a much needed break from the daily stress that comes with caring for a child with disabilities.
