Gray Cottage & Opportunity House Gray Cottage opened July 1st , 2007 as a DSS-licensed child care facility to provide residential care for male or female children 7 to 17 years of age. Alumni of The Children's Home, Methodist church groups and corporate volunteers have worked diligently to renovate this Cottage which has been closed for the last four years. Gray Cottage is a nearly 10,000 sq foot home with nine spacious bedrooms, modern security and monitoring equipment and has been fully repainted and refurbished with new appliances, mattresses, linens, kitchen equipment and much more! After many years of service under the auspices of Youth Opportunities, Opportunity House joined the array of services at The Children's Home’s as of September 1st, 2009. Operations and services continued smoothly through the transition between agencies. Now the support services and opportunities that are provided on a larger residential campus is available to the youth and families on a daily basis. Both Gray Cottage and Opportunity House are prepared for emergency placements. Call 336-748-0003 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A staff member will either answer the phone or return the call as soon as possible. Admissions can be immediate or planned. While placement length is not limited in Gray Cottage, active permanency plans are an expectation and staff will participate in Child and Family Teams.
Residents will be involved in a variety of experiential activities including our ropes course, equine therapy, horticultural therapy, and use of our swimming pool, nature trails, mountain biking course, indoor and outdoor climbing walls, full size gym, ceramics studio, Frisbee golf course, greenhouse, miniature horses and gardening. An emphasis is put on entrepreneurial skill building through children working for pay and /or restitution with staff in our offices, maintenance, or farm departments. Experienced staff will expedite communication with the Department of Social Services, Juvenile Justice System, Guardian Ad Litems and parents/legal guardians. Supervised visitation by families and friends is expected as part of a child’s permanency plan. 1001 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27104 Phone: 336-721-7600
