ReStart – A state-of-the-art adolescent residential substance abuse
treatment program located on a 212 acre campus and farm in Winston-Salem,
N.C.
The
Children’s Home co-ed ReStart residential substance abuse
program offers youth an opportunity to acquire the building blocks, or
assets, necessary to become confident about themselves and add value to
their community. The name ReStart represents the opportunity
the program offers youth to begin a new direction in life that is more
congruent with their true interests and dreams for themselves in becoming a
happy, purposeful, and successful adult. ReStart is a highly
structured intervention for youth experiencing significant substance abuse
and other mental health and quality of life issues. It is a program
specifically designed for youth that have been unsuccessful in dealing with
these issues using less intensive services such as outpatient therapy or
stand-alone day treatment. ReStart is an immersion experience
that moves the youth from their natural environment to a comparatively
controlled environment with 24/7/365 intentional, therapeutic programming.
This 126 day (18 week) intensive, life-altering treatment system utilizes a
wide-range of proven approaches for working with at-risk adolescents
including: experiential adventure-based counseling, the evidence-based Seven
Challenges substance abuse treatment model, individualized academic
planning, family involvement and empowerment, solution-focused and
strength-based philosophy, peer accountability, behavior modification and
internalization, and value clarification. Each component is carefully
interwoven around a Rites of Passage theme that gently supports youth in
moving through the stages of treatment and is specifically designed to
complement the adolescent’s natural developmental tendency to move from
child to adult. As opposed to a top-down, controlling, deficit-based
approach to treatment, ReStart encourages self-exploration,
value clarification, enhanced decision-making skills, and personal asset
development. As the self-esteem and self-efficacy of youth increases they
are significantly more inclined to make decisions that are good for both
themselves and our community at large. With the help of families, schools,
court counselors, mentors, and other stakeholders we are confident in our
ability to give youth a fresh start and a new outlook on their lives.
